The Pictorial Citation Between Reenactment & Autonomic Gesture

The paintings by artist Till Julian Huss refer to their main theme in various ways: on the one hand, by drawing on the history of art, the artist retraces the development of metaphors of light in the history of philosophy. On the other, in this manner, he focuses on the manner in which light is represented in painting and transfers them to the present. Huss’s investigations are premised on the assumption that, since the modern period there has been a denigrating, even obfuscating attitude towards light. These works are part of a work cycle, part of which furthermore are three films and three book-objects.

The Tradition of the cosmic and divine taking its root in antiquity, up to the middle ages, forms a complex philosophical concept of light. But even within artistic modes of representation, the idea of light for a long time bears the mark of the unfath- omably divine: confused and omnipresent, it remains a sublime principle. Only in the 17th century does light become endowed with meaning as a metaphor for earthly affairs and the double denigration begins: supported by the horizontally evolving conceptions of the world, reason, religion and life, as Huss puts it, this development culminates in the obfuscation of light in Modernity and Postmodernism. Light no longer is divinely given, but corresponds to profane gestures, such as selection and manipulation.
